SELFOC®

Ultrafine SELFOC® LENS

Nippon Sheet Glass has developed "Ultrafine SELFOC® LENS" with a diameter of 125um*. This lens is expected to be used in the development of new products such as optical communications, silicon photonics, and ultra-fine endoscopes, which existing SELFOC® lenses could not handle.

For collimating and
focusing light

By combining an optical fiber with a SELFOC® lens, it is possible to collimate or focus the light emitted from the optical fiber.
Since the Ultrafine SELFOC® LENS has the same diameter as the optical fiber, it enables the realization of very compact products.

**

Application of Ultrafine SELFOC® LENS for collimating light

-It can realize optical fiber connectors for liquid immersion cooling since SELFOC lens can refract light in liquid.
-It can make optical fiber connectors for CPO(Co-Package Optics) or SiPh(Silicon Photonics) easier to use by tolerance relaxation.
-It can realize EB(Expanded beam) optical fiber connectors for severe environment where dust or dirt affect the connectivity of connectors.

**

Application of Ultrafine SELFOC® LENS for focusing light

-It can realize SSC(Spot Size Converter) for CPO or SiPh

**

-Using V-groove or other parts, Ultrafine SELFOC® LENS can be used for multiple optical fiber application.

Comparison with similar technologyComparison with similar technology

Compared to aspheric lenses and ball lenses, SELFOC® lenses have the advantages of being able to produce extremely thin lenses, being easy to handle because of their cylindrical shape with a flat end face, and not requiring a mold.
Other features include multiple NA lineups from low NA to high NA, and a refractive index distribution over a diameter of 125um compared to optical fibers that have a refractive index distribution only in the core area.

What is a SELFOC® lens?

SELFOC® lens is a thin glass rod or filament whose refractive index decreases in a parabolic shape from the central to the peripheral areas.
It can transmit light beams in a sinusoidal shape. In addition, it works as a highly functional lens without using a spherical process.

In addition to the SELFOC® lenses introduced above, NSG also offers a lineup of lens products that can be used in the communications field, including microlens arrays that utilize glass nanoimprint technology. If you are interested in our products, please refer to the following pages.
